Set up in July 1993, Astha is one the few organisations that provides a range of services to children with multiple and severe disabilities.

Its areas of work are early intervention and detection, special education, physiotherapy, speech therapy, nutrition, play-centred activities, medical intervention, information dissemination and medical camps with families and communities. Innovative strategies yield rich dividends: in 2002, all Astha's students participated in DOSTI, a play based on a delightful story from the Panchatantra.

An outreach program at Govindpuri aims to rehabilitate children with different disabilities and also to empower the community as change agents. Focus groups are working with children, young adults, families and communities, and new methods that have enhanced the responses of beneficiaries. Believing that the role of information dissemination is vital, Astha has been preparing a database on available schemes, special schools, major hospitals and their services.
