Focus: Support for 'neglected', street, and working children.
Following a devastating fire in one of the Capital's slum localities, Prayas was established in 1988 as a joint initiative of Delhi Police, Delhi School of Social Work and Shramik Vidyapeeth, Through its 65 non-formal education centres, 20 vocational trades, 14 community libraries, one mobile health van, and other intervention programmes, Prayas covers nearly fifty thousand children every year. In addition, it also helped child labourers, children in conflict with the law, and child prostitutes.
The Institute of Juvenile Justice, the apex unit of Prayas, supports 'research, training, resource management, information, education, communication and a shelter home'.
The organisation runs slum based non-formal education through 36 non-formal education centers covering 3,000 children annually and vocational training programmes in more than 20 trades. It supports three shelter homes for destitute and neglected children and programme areas also include health care, nutrition, counselling, recreational and support services to the family and the community.
Annual programme budget: Rs. 339.82 Lakh.
Prayas is registered society (S/20291/89) and all donations are exempt under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act.
