Focus: Mainstreaming persons with disability.

Started in 1982 by a core group of media educators interested in children's education, Jan Madhyam's major concern has been the rehabilitation of challenged young people - specifically girls - with learning, intellectual and economic disadvantages. Today it works with about 250 girls and their families. Jan Madhyam uses different media forms such as puppets, games, music and dance, painting and clay work, with the active participation of family to impart training.

A few of its programme areas include:

• training towards economic self-sufficiency of able, disabled, and economically disadvantaged trainees. The vocational training centre EORTEC offers courses in a formal, structured academic environment, to set trainees firmly on a path towards income generation
  
• self-employment training and placement (SETU - the bridge) that focuses on organising small groups for independent production and mobilising parent support and community participation. Main activities include training in marketing, costing, and inventory control
  
• life enrichment through life skills forms an essential part of Jan Madhyam's training programmes and includes the building of the elementary concepts of social norms and self-care introduced in the pre-vocational course
  
• self advocacy (Srijan) - encouraging people with disability to be more visible, more confident, to enter the mainstream and become givers, not just takers
• under Srijan, Jan Madhyam's trainees conduct workshops in regular and special schools

Annual programme budget: Rs. 21 Lakh.

Jan Madhyam is a registered society (S/7242) and all donations are exempt under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act.
