Focus: To identify and work along with the economically and socially deprived, the physically and mentally challenged, so that they become educated, skilled, and aware.

In 1979, seven like-minded individuals, guided by the spirit of giving back to society, decided to educate poor children in slums. Having completed 25 years this July, Deepalaya has 400 workers educating 16,000 children in 320 centers and seven formal schools. Spread over Delhi as well as 84 villages of Mewat (Haryana) and Takola block of Haryana, Deepalaya has been able to educate over 40,000 children.

A recognition that education and learning is integrally linked to general health and well-being has led to Deepalaya's programmes for:

• mainstreaming the differently-abled child
  
• community health that works to establish effective and sustainable mechanisms in promotive, preventive and rehabilitative health
  Annual programme budget: Rs. 400 Lakh.
  
• communication of overall awareness in hygiene and sanitation, reproductive health and HIV/AIDS through interactive processes such as rallies, health camps, street theatre, and puppet shows
  
• gender equity that enables women through enhanced socio-cultural, economic, and political opportunities to take important decisions in their lives
  
• institutional care for the vulnerable (street and working children) that provides residential care, formal education, vocational and health care and talent development
