Focus: Educational and Vocational Training Support for the Underprivileged Child.

Established in 1996, Literacy India provides diverse educational support to children from underprivileged communities located in and around Palam Vihar, Gurgaon. It aims to provide a broad-based educational framework. Apart from basic primary education the emphasis is on overall personality development, which helps instill confidence and equality among the children. The focus is to bring out the latent talent and skills in the children.

Through its Patshala programme, for two hours every day a primary school environment caters to slum children as well as providing tutorial assistance to weaker school-going children.

Shiksharth aims at providing a platform to the children for bringing out latent talent and skills in various art forms such as painting, pottery, theatre, dance etc. The Vidyapeeth programme provides the basis of a non-formal curriculum while Gurukul extends support to those who desire to achieve mainstream English education; its Karigari programme provides vocational training for older children.

In addition, its community awareness programme called Jagruta, enables Literacy India to impart progressive learning through street theatre on issues concerning the environment, health, hygiene and the importance of girl child education.

Annual programme budget: Rs. 19 Lakh.

Literacy India is a registered charitable trust (7331/4) and all donations are exempt under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act.
