In 1991, a dedicated British animal rights activist, Ms Crystal Rogers, founded Compassion Unlimited Plus Actions (CUPA) as continuation of the work she had been doing in animal care since 1959. Functioning from multiple centres in Bangalore city, it works directly with injured, abandoned and wounded animals, birds and reptiles.

CUPA is involved with:

• the CUPA Hospital and Animal Shelter that provides 24 hours services for sick or injured animals using modern diagnostic facilities like a well-equipped laboratory, X-Ray, ECG and Intensive Care Unit. This hospital is attached to the Veterinary College and is located on its campus in Hebbal. It has the only cattery of its kind in Bangalore.
• the CUPA animal birth control (ABC) and anti-rabies vaccination programme of stray dogs. This programme treats over 2000 dogs every month.
• Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation Centre (WRRC), sister concern of CUPA, in collaboration with the State Wildlife Department, that has constructed the Bannerghatta Rehabilitation Centre (BRC) for the rescue of small wild mammals, birds and reptiles.
• conducting programmes, school trips for the release of rehabilitated birds and reptiles and media campaigns on compassion towards animals as well as first aid training in schools, colleges and other public forums.

Annual programme budget: Rs. 59.7 Lakhs.

CUPA is a charitable trust (603/91-92) and all donations are exempt under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act.
