Founded in 1954 by Dr (Mrs) S Muthulakshmi Reddy, the Cancer Institute (WIA) provides the finest facility in diagnostic and therapeautic oncology to the poorest in the land.
Spread over nine acres in Chennai, the hospital houses 423 beds of which 297 are free. Over 80,000 patients are seen annually. They come from all over India as well as parts of South and South East Asia. More than 66% of them are indigent and are treated free of charge.
The Institute is equipped with world-class medical facilities for the treatment for all kinds of cancers and houses a hospital, the College of Oncological Sciences, an exclusive division for Preventive Oncology, and a research centre.
In 2002, the first Comprehensive Hereditary cancer detection and prevention programme in the country was started. Plans for the future involve building a hospice for the terminally ill, creating a new Pediatric Oncology Wing, expanding rehabilitation services (Post-Treatment Patients Placements For Jobs), and building a new ICU, amongst others.
Annual programme budget: Rs. 1,335 Lakh.
Cancer Institute (WIA) is a registered society (86) and all donations are exempt under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act.
